Barren River Lake RV Camping: Planning Tips for Your Trip

Updated: 2 hours ago
RV camping at Barren River Lake puts you close to the water. A little planning makes the
trip smoother. This guide covers how to research campgrounds, what to check before you tow, and what to pack for South Central Kentucky.
A quick note: The Resort at Barren River Lake is under construction and not open. It will offer RV sites only across the road from the lake, with no cabins planned and no direct lake access. Join the waiting list through our Contact page and we'll share news as it happens.
Researching campgrounds
Campgrounds around the lake are run by different operators, including federal, state and private ones. A few starting points:
Recreation.gov lists Corps of Engineers facilities in the Barren River Lake area
KDFWR's WMA page notes that the Tailwater Campground below the dam is open year-round, and that there's no camping on the wildlife management area itself
Search 'Kentucky campgrounds' plus a town name (Scottsville, Glasgow, Bowling Green) to compare private options
If Mammoth Cave is on your list, look at campgrounds closer to the park for those days
Questions to ask before you book
Which hookups are offered: electric amperage, water and sewer?
What's the maximum rig length, and are sites pull-through or back-in?
Is there a dump station, and is it open in your travel season?
What's the pet policy?
How close is the nearest boat ramp, and is there boat or trailer parking?

Check the lake before you tow
Water levels change with the season. KDFWR notes the Port Oliver ramp isn't usable at lower water levels, mainly during winter drawdowns. If you're bringing a boat, check lake conditions with the Corps of Engineers and the ramp list on KDFWR's Barren River Lake page. Our Barren River Lake News section has a water level guide.
Licenses and rules
Planning to fish or hunt? Buy your Kentucky licenses and read current regulations at KDFWR. Barren River Lake has special fishing regulations for several species.
Supplies
Scottsville and the surrounding towns have groceries and supplies, and Bowling Green has larger stores; distance and driving time depend on your exact starting point. Stock up on bread, cheese and baked goods at the Mennonite shops in northern Allen County. See our Shopping and Food guides.

Watch for horse-drawn buggies in northern Allen County
Plan fuel stops before rural stretches
Download maps for offline use before you leave, in case you lose cell service
Making the most of your stay

Mammoth Cave, Bowling Green and Nashville are all within day-trip range. Check our Day Trips and Activities guides for ideas.
