Barren River Lake WMA includes 8,735 acres around the lake in Allen and Barren counties. The Corps of Engineers owns the land, with wildlife-management information and hunting rules provided by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR). Its fields and woodlands offer hunting and wildlife-viewing opportunities, subject to unit and season restrictions. Here are the basics before you go. Sources: KDFWR area details.

What the Barren River Lake WMA offers

The WMA is spread across shoreline tracts rather than one single block. KDFWR's area page has maps, boundaries and local restrictions, and camping is not allowed on the WMA. Read the current hunting guides as well: the Peninsula Unit has species-specific exceptions, so 'primitive-weapons only' is not a complete rule. The 2026–27 guide permits modern or muzzleloading shotguns for waterfowl on Barren River Lake, including that unit. Sources: area maps and rules; current guide updates.

Barren River Lake deer hunting

White-tailed deer are the main draw. Barren River Lake deer hunting happens on public ground shared with other hunters, hikers and anglers, so scout early, learn the boundaries, and wear the required hunter orange during firearm seasons. Kentucky sets statewide seasons for archery, crossbow, muzzleloader and modern gun, and it requires deer to be telechecked. WMAs can have their own restrictions on top of the statewide rules. Turkey and small game

Wild turkey are hunted in spring and fall seasons. Small game hunters work the fields and woods for squirrel, rabbit and other species in season. The grass fields managed for wildlife are a big part of what makes the area productive. Sources: current hunting seasons; area-specific exceptions.

Waterfowl opportunities include walk-in or boat-in hunting and season-long blind sites allocated through a drawing. Check the current KDFWR waterfowl guide for dates, blind rules, unit exceptions and any closures. License, state migratory-bird/waterfowl permit, federal duck-stamp and HIP requirements depend on age and exemption status; verify what applies to you before hunting. Lake-level changes can affect access and where birds gather. Sources: KDFWR public-land waterfowl rules; current waterfowl guide.

Licenses and Kentucky hunting seasons

  • Buy the licenses and species permits required for your hunt through KDFWR. Short-term hunting licenses have limitations and are not valid for deer, elk, turkey or bear. Sources: current license table.

  • Kentucky hunting seasons and bag limits are published each year in the KDFWR hunting guides. Get dates from the current guide, not from last year's memory or a forum post. Sources: current guides.

  • Hunter education requirements apply based on age and birth date. KDFWR explains who needs a card and how to get one. Sources: KDFWR hunter education.

  • Carry your license and permits in the field, and know the area's rules on blinds, stands, vehicles and shooting near roads and recreation areas. Sources: public-land rules.

Wildlife viewing Kentucky: eagles, waterfowl and grassland birds

You don't have to hunt to enjoy the WMA. Winter can be a rewarding time to look for waterfowl and eagles around the lake; woodland and field edges offer other wildlife-viewing opportunities through the year. Sightings are never guaranteed. Bring binoculars, use designated parking, respect boundaries and stay out of closed areas. Sources: state park birding information; WMA access information.

If you visit during a hunting season, wear blaze orange yourself, stay on roads or established paths, and check the KDFWR season calendar before you go. Sources: current hunting guides.

KDFWR's Public Lands Search lists maps and rules for each one. We'll post season reminders and wildlife sightings in this category throughout the year.
