Boating on Barren River Lake: Marinas, Ramps and Rentals

Updated: 1 hour ago
Boating on Barren River Lake is the center of most trips here. The lake covers about 10,000 acres at normal summer pool, with long arms, quiet coves and plenty of room for pontoons, ski boats, fishing rigs and paddlers. This guide covers the Barren River Lake marinas, the main boat ramps, where to rent, where to swim, and a few things to check before you launch. USACE lake information.

Barren River Lake marinas
Four marinas serve the lake, and each has a slightly different focus:
Barren River State Dock: the state park marina has slips and a launch ramp; its current rental page lists pontoons, tritoons and kayaks. Confirm availability for your dates. State Dock rentals.
The Narrows Marina: the operator lists year-round marina services, slips, fuel, a store, seasonal dining and pontoon, fishing-boat, kayak and canoe rentals. Confirm individual service hours. Narrows and Walnut Creek operator.
Walnut Creek Marina & Campground: the operator lists seasonal marina services, fuel, a store, boat rentals, RV sites and a restaurant. Confirm dates and availability. Marina operator.
Peninsula Marina: about two miles from Barren River Dam, with a marina store, fuel, and covered and uncovered slips. Peninsula Marina services.
Barren River Lake boat ramps
Port Oliver is a paved, multi-lane tournament ramp near the dam with a courtesy dock and a launch fee. KDFWR lists accessible facilities there but also warns that the ramp is not usable at lower winter drawdown levels. Check current ramp and shore-access conditions, including any mobility requirements, before leaving home. Other public launches are listed in KDFWR’s lake access directory. KDFWR Port Oliver access details. Other lake access points.
Port Oliver can be busy during tournament season. Check the event schedule and current launch conditions; use another ramp only after confirming it is suitable and open.
Barren River Lake boat rentals
You do not need to tow a boat to get on the water. The Narrows lists pontoons, fishing boats, kayaks and canoes; State Dock’s current fleet page lists pontoons, tritoons and kayaks; Walnut Creek also advertises boat rentals. Confirm the exact craft, dates, operating area, total price and operator requirements before reserving. State Dock rental fleet. Narrows and Walnut Creek rentals.
Kayaking Barren River Lake
An early start may help you avoid some traffic, but wind, wakes and conditions can make any part of the lake choppy. Choose a route matched to your skill and the forecast, wear a properly fitted life jacket, and carry water, sun protection and a way to call for help. Do not assume a cove or shoreline route is always sheltered.
Swimming and the beach
Before swimming, confirm a designated area is open and follow its posted conditions and restrictions. USACE lists designated beaches at Beaver Creek and Quarry Road; ask the state park separately about any swimming access there. For boat-based swimming, follow Kentucky boating rules, stop the engine, stay clear of traffic and propellers, and supervise children closely. USACE swimming-area information.
Before you launch
Check the lake level. The Corps lowers the lake from summer pool toward winter pool in the fall, which changes ramps, shorelines and hazards.
Check the weather. Summer afternoon storms build fast; head in at the first thunder.
Carry a properly fitting life jacket for everyone aboard and follow Kentucky’s wearing requirements for children and particular activities. Review required equipment and other boating rules before departure. KDFWR boating guide.
Know where fuel is. The Narrows, Walnut Creek and Peninsula marinas all sell fuel.
Bring a lake map or app, and check the Corps of Engineers water data for the current pool elevation.
We'll keep adding marina, ramp and swimming updates in this category.
