Visiting Allen County’s Rural Markets Respectfully

Updated: 2 hours ago

A rural market visit is a visit to someone’s working community. The most useful preparation is a clear destination and a little patience. Choose businesses that welcome the public, respect their hours and leave homes and farms outside your itinerary unless you are invited.
Use the business’s own name
Habegger’s Amish Market is the name listed in the Scottsville-Allen County Chamber’s shopping directory. Use a shop’s stated name when asking for directions. Do not assume that every nearby household shares the same religious identity, welcomes visitors or operates a public business. Chamber shopping listings.
Check before making a special trip
Confirm the particular shop’s location, opening days and payment options. A general description of “Amish country” is not a reliable address or operating schedule. If you are bringing a group, call ahead where contact information is available rather than arriving with an unexpected number of vehicles.
Respect the boundary between shop and home
Park in designated visitor areas and leave driveways, gates and work areas clear. Ask before entering a building that is not clearly open to customers. Shopping does not include permission to explore fields, barns, gardens or private lanes.
Ask before taking photographs
Treat people, children and private homes with the same consideration you would want for your own family. Ask first, accept a refusal without argument and do not turn an ordinary transaction into a photo opportunity. Buy what interests you and let the seller set the pace of the conversation.
Keep the visit flexible
A small shop may have limited stock or an unexpected closure. Have one alternative in mind and enjoy the stop without demanding a fixed experience. The reward is a thoughtful visit and a purchase you genuinely want, rather than a checklist of sights. These independent community businesses are separate from The Resort at Barren River Lake.
