Rural markets near Scottsville, KY can make an enjoyable stop during a Barren River Lake trip. Habegger’s Amish Market appears in the local Chamber’s shopping directory, and other farm-country businesses may offer food or handmade goods. This guide focuses on choosing public businesses, checking what is available and visiting respectfully.

The Old Order Mennonite community in Allen County

The countryside around Scottsville includes farms and businesses associated with plain communities. A shop’s name does not establish the religious identity of every nearby household. Choose a confirmed public business as your destination, use its stated name and stay on public roads.

Habegger's Amish Market

Habegger’s Amish Market is listed by the Chamber at 415 Perrytown Road for local products and Dutch-made bulk foods. Ask the market about today’s stock and prepared-food options, and confirm hours before going. It can also be a starting point for asking which nearby businesses currently welcome shoppers. Perrytown Road bakeries and shops

  • Use the Chamber’s shopping directory to identify public businesses and verify directions. Current local shopping listings.

  • Ask each seller about current baked goods, produce, preserves or handmade items rather than treating a guide as a stock list.

  • For a seasonal farm experience, confirm that visitors are welcome and whether a demonstration is actually scheduled.

  • Keep homes, barns, private lanes and work areas outside your visit unless invited.

Many plain-community shops don't have websites or posted hours online, and what's for sale depends on the season. Go with a loose plan and enjoy the drive.

Visitor etiquette

  • Respect privacy. Don't photograph people without asking, and don't wander onto farms or homes that aren't open shops.

  • Check opening days. Sunday closures are common, but confirm each business separately.

  • Bring cash. Smaller shops may not take cards.

  • Drive slowly. Buggies are slow-moving vehicles, often on hills and curves. Give them plenty of room, pass only when you can see clearly ahead, and don't honk near horses.

  • Dress modestly and keep your voice down in shops. It's someone's home and business.

Amish country day trips: Hart and Todd counties

If you enjoy Allen County, two larger communities are within a day trip:

  • Hart County, around Horse Cave and Munfordville: an Amish community with bakeries, groceries and furniture shops. Hart County Tourism publishes a shopping itinerary. Farmwald's Restaurant & Bakery in Horse Cave is an Amish-style restaurant, bakery and country store offering baked goods and homemade meals; check the current menu rather than assuming a buffet is running.

  • Todd County, around Guthrie, Elkton and Fairview: a self-guided Amish country day trip with bakeries, produce, quilts and tack shops. The Todd County Chamber publishes a day-trip flyer, and Schlabach's Bakery near Guthrie is a well-known stop. Farmwald’s current menu. Hart County Tourism itinerary. Todd County Chamber day-trip guide.

Hart County pairs well with a Mammoth Cave visit, since both are off I-65 to the north.

When to go

Spring and summer bring fresh produce and flowers. Fall can be a good time to ask about harvest products; confirm any farm demonstration directly. Winter is quieter, and some shops may cut back. Whatever the season, go on a weekday or Saturday morning for the best selection.

We'll share more about the plain communities near Barren River Lake in this category, always with respect for the families who live there.
