The local businesses near Barren River Lake are a big part of what makes a trip here feel like South Central Kentucky and not anywhere else. Most are small, family-run and close to home: cafes on the square in Scottsville KY, marinas with ship stores on the water, makers out in the county, and the historic storefronts around the square in Glasgow KY. Here's a starting list, sorted by where you'll be.

Downtown Scottsville: cafes and the courthouse square

Downtown Scottsville is a Main Street historic district built around the courthouse square, with shops, cafes and community events. It's the closest town center for many lake visitors and an easy place to spend a morning.

  • 773 Co.: a cafe and coffee shop just off the square.

  • The Ninety and Nine Cafe and The Bog Moo: two downtown eateries on East Main Street.

  • Griddles Restaurant: a family-owned breakfast and lunch diner.

  • Earl G. Dumplin's and Smoke Shack BBQ: Southern plates, catfish and smoked meats close to town. Chamber dining directory.

Scottsville also has a business story people don't expect. One of the country's largest discount-store chains traces its roots to J.L. Turner and Son, a wholesale business that opened here in 1939. Chamber’s Dollar General history.

The Core of Scottsville lists aquatics, group fitness and other community programs. Check its current schedule and visitor-access requirements before going; a listing does not guarantee drop-in access to every facility. The Core’s programs and visitor information.

Barren River Lake marinas and lakeside stops

The marinas are local businesses too, and they're often the best source of current lake information. Each one is a little different:

  • Walnut Creek Marina & Campground: a seasonal, full-service marina on the Allen County side with slips, a fuel dock, ship store, boat rentals, RV sites and a lakeside restaurant.

  • The Narrows Marina: a year-round, full-service marina with covered slips, fuel, a ship store, a restaurant, and pontoon, fishing boat, kayak and canoe rentals.

  • Peninsula Marina: about two miles from Barren River Dam, with a marina store and fuel. Peninsula Marina’s location and services.

  • Barren River State Dock: the state resort park's marina, with open and covered slips, a launch ramp, and rental fishing boats and pontoons. Walnut Creek and The Narrows operator details. Barren River State Dock services.

Off the water, Paradise Point Marketplace mixes Southern breakfast and hot dogs with a boutique and what it calls funky junk, and Rusty's Lakeside Pub is a casual stop near the lake.

Makers and shops out in the county

For county shopping, start with the Chamber’s public business listings and ask sellers about other shops that currently welcome visitors. Small makers and farm stands may have limited hours or seasonal stock. Confirm any factory visit or farm demonstration directly instead of assuming a retail listing includes a tour. Glasgow KY and Bowling Green

Glasgow's public square is lined with historic commercial buildings like the one pictured above. Fine Arts Bistro serves breakfast and lunch on the square and doubles as an artist space, and the restored Plaza Theatre hosts concerts and shows. In downtown Bowling Green, The Pots Place is an artist co-op pottery studio and gallery. Bowling Green tourism’s gallery listing. Kentucky Tourism’s Glasgow dining guide.

Tips for supporting local businesses

  • Check hours before you drive. Small shops and seasonal marinas set their own schedules, and many plain-community businesses close on Sundays.

  • Bring some cash for farm stands, bakeries and small shops in the county.

  • Ask the people behind the counter. Marina staff and shop owners usually know what's running well, what's closed and where to eat.

  • Leave a review and tell friends. For a small business, that matters more than you'd think.
