Campfire-Baked Apples with Cinnamon, Oats, and Brown Sugar

These baked apples cook in foil over campfire coals. The filling of oats, cinnamon, and brown sugar softens as the apples bake, and cleanup is minimal.
Ingredients (serves 4)
4 firm apples (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 2–3 tablespoons butter (cut into pieces), and optional raisins or chopped nuts. Heavy-duty aluminum foil.
Method
Core the apples, leaving the bottom intact so the filling stays inside. Mix the oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stuff each apple with the oat mixture and top with a piece of butter. Wrap each apple tightly in heavy-duty foil. Place the packets on a grate over medium campfire coals or nestle them in the coals around the edge of the fire. Cook 25–35 minutes, turning once, until the apples are tender when checked carefully with a fork. Use tongs and heat-resistant gloves to handle the packets. Open carefully—steam will be hot. Serve warm.
Firm apples hold their shape better than soft ones. If the fire is very hot, move the packets farther from the center to avoid burning the bottoms. The apples can be cored and filled at the campsite in a few minutes.
